Abstract

Sibling rivalry is a phenomenon that often occurs in various cultures, including among adolescents at MTS Darul Ulum Sidoarjo. Sibling rivalry occurs due to parenting factors that like to compare, unfair parental attitudes, and poor communication and family harmony. This study aims to analyze the relationship between parenting patterns and family harmony with sibling rivalry in adolescents at MTS Darul Ulum Sidoarjo. The research design used an analytical observational design. The research sample was 72 students who had siblings, selected using purposive sampling and proportionate stratified random sampling techniques. The instruments used were parenting styles (Parenting Styles & Dimensions Questionnaire—Short Version (PSDQ)), family harmony questionnaire (Family Harmony Scale (FHS-24)), and sibling rivalry questionnaire (Siblings Rivalry Scale). Data analysis of parenting patterns used the Chi-Square test and family harmony used the Fisher's Exact test (p < 0.05). The results of the study showed that most parents applied authoritarian parenting patterns as much as 56.9%, adolescents with less harmonious families as much as 59.7%, and as much as 58.3% of adolescents experienced sibling rivalry. The results showed that there was a relationship between parenting patterns and sibling rivalry, where 85.4% of adolescents who experienced sibling rivalry received authoritarian parenting patterns. There was a relationship between family harmony and sibling rivalry as much as 81.4% of adolescents from less harmonious families. This research implies that parenting patterns and family harmony are related to sibling rivalry in adolescents, which hurts children's psychological, social, academic and future development. Conflict that is not managed well risks damaging relationships between siblings, reducing achievement, and affecting their ability to build healthy relationships in adulthood.
