Abstract
ABSTRACK Oral stimulation is an oral motor skill to stimulate between sucking, swallowing and breathing that is experiencing obstacles. One of the efforts to overcome this problem is to provide oral stimulation early on in the form of massaging touch to the muscle tissue around the lips and mouth. The purpose of the study was to identify the effect of oral stimulation on suction reflexes in premature infants. The research design used was Quasy-Experiment Pre Test - Post Test control design. The population in this study were average patients per day for 11 months, namely January - November 2023 who were admitted to the Central NICU of Dr. Ramelan Surabaya as many as 155 babies. The sampling technique used purposive sampling method as many as 58 respondents. Instruments using demographic questionnaires and observation sheets. Data were analyzed with the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test statistical test with a significance of p <0.05. The results stated that there was an influence between oral stimulation and suction reflex in premature infants. Wilcoxon test to compare two groups of paired data observed in subjects before and after treatment with p value = 0.000, meaning that there is an effect of oral stimulation on suction reflexes in premature infants. Based on the results of this study, oral stimulation is necessary to increase muscle strength in the baby's suction reflex, because weak suction reflexes in premature babies can reduce body weight so that the provision of oral stimulation therapy can be used to improve muscle strength. Keywords: Oral stimulation, suction reflex, preterm.
