Abstract

Depression is a profound sadness that occurs after experiencing a dramatic or sad event. Depression can cause a person to commit suicide and drain the emotional and financial patient, family and support systems that exist. This study aims to get a picture of the level of depression in female prisoners in Rutan Medaeng Surabaya. Descriptive design was used on 119 samples of respondents. The variable of this research is single variable that is depresi level. The research instrument used Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) Questionnaire. The results showed that 24 respondents had mild depression level, 59 respondents had moderate depression, while 36 respondents had severe depression. Factors associated with the cause of depression are biological, genetic and psychosocial factors. Based on these factors can be concluded that depressed people generally experience emotional disturbances, dysfunctional motivation, and sertakognisi. Depressed inmates may be given psychotherapy approaches such as interpersonal therapy, cognitive therapy, behavioral therapy. Keywords: depression, prisoners, women
